Sandra Schmirler won three Canadian and world titles, but it was her Olympic gold medal at the 1998 games in Nagano, Japan, that saw her crowned as Canada's "Queen of Curling."
And it was her demonstrated belief in family, friends and the preciousness of life that won her a place in the hearts of everyone she met.
With her teammates, third Jan Betker, second Joan McCusker and lead Marcia Gudereit, the Saskatchewan four was voted The Canadian Press Team of the Year in 1998 by sports editors and broadcasters across the country after
winning that first women's curling gold.
Sandra Schmirler was voted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame just two years before her tragic death from cancer at age 36.
