Fitzhenry and Whiteside Book of Canadian Facts and Dates
Richard Pound

More than 14,000 individual date-by-date entries in this single volume chronology of Canadian history

This single-volume chronology of Canada from its prehistoric beginnings to the social, cultural, business and political happenings of the present age is the most comprehensive and up-to-date book of its kind in the market today.

With more than 14,000 entries and featuring both a detailed general index as well as a separate index of names, the book is an invaluable resource and reference work for students, teachers, and researchers.

Equally important, it is a valuable treasure trove of Canadiana – a volume, like a dictionary, atlas or encyclopedia, that should find its way onto the shelves of every home, office, media, public, university and school library.

Under the general editorship of Richard Pound, more than 25 researchers, editors and contributors were assigned to research and validate important events and dates in the areas of women’s issues, human rights, science and technology, transportation, medicine, communications, art and literature, education, sports, agriculture, music and at least a dozen other areas of national interest.

1.9 Ga A massive meteorite slammed into what is now the Sudbury area of Ontario, creating a wide crater and upwelling of nickel-rich volcanic rocks.

2000-1500 BCE, Labrador Small numbers of Paleo-Eskimo, of the "Arctic Small Tool Tradition," physically, culturally and linguistically different from the Maritime Archaic Indians arrived on the N. Labrador coast and stayed for about 500 years. They focused on maritime resources, with ice hunting techniques. Their sites have been found at Saglek Bay, Thalia Point, Okak, Napatok, Hopedale, and Hamilton Inlet.

875 CE Irish monks, fleeing Iceland, are believed to have landed at Brion Island (Magdalen Islands) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and to have settled on Cape Breton Is. The settlement, called Huitramann land ("Country of the White Man"), was gradually taken over and the inhabitants absorbed into the native Mi'kmaq population.

June 7, 1576 Martin Frobisher (c 1539-1594) sailed with the Gabriel and Michael from England to search for a northwest passage. The Muscovy Company granted Frobisher a licence with the support of Queen Elizabeth I and the London Merchants.

May 20, 1784 David Thompson (1770-1857) apprenticed to the HBC, set sail aboard HBC's Prince Rupert for HBC's Churchill Factory on Hudson Bay. He was 14 years old, a graduate of London’s Grey Coat Charity school near Westminster Abbey, and would never see England again.

Reviews:
"A treasure trove of Canadiana for students, teachers, and librarians. . . this reasonably priced resource is recommended for all libraries in Canada and larger libraries in the United States."
-- Library Journal

"A well-researched and comprehensive reference tool that warrants a place in all Canadian libraries."
-- School Library Journal

"The Book of Canadian Facts and Dates has a grand scope. It covers, in chronological order, all of Canadian history from the formation of the country until the end of 2003. This approach lets a reader follow a particular topic or event, such as the War of 1812, as it unfolds over time."
-- FFWD, Calgary

"The balanced, inclusive approach of this volume is apparent from its first pages, where both the scientific theories regarding the creation of Canada (i.e., geographic and climate changes) as well as the Native creation stories are given equal attention."
-- Coutts Canadian-Flavoured Education News
