
Submission Guidelines

Manuscript Submissions: Adult Trade
|

Please submit all
queries and manuscript proposals by mail; because of the volume and
time frames to process submissions material submitted will not be
returned.
Manuscript proposals should contain an overview of the work, with a list
of contents, and representative samples (preferably part of one chapter). Also,
a current cv. Please do not send complete manuscripts. Altogether, please
submit no more than ten pages of work.
Proposals regarding photographic or illustrative works should be
initiated through query only.
Please remember that the adult trade department considers non-fiction
and poetry. We do not consider fiction.

Editorial Guidelines
Fitzhenry &
Whiteside Children’s Publishing Division is currently seeking manuscripts for
the following:
-
Primary
picture book text (approx. 500 to 800 words) for children ages 3 to 5,
-
Middle
Grade fiction text (approx. 25,000 to 35,000 words) for children ages 8 to 12,
-
Young
Adult fiction text (approx. 40,000 to 50,000 words) for children 12 and up,
-
Non-fiction texts for juvenile picture books 5 and up - school curriculum
related,
-
Non-fiction texts for older readers 8 and up - school curriculum related,
and
-
Non-Fiction manuscripts for Young Adult Readers 12 and up.
We are no
longer accepting manuscripts for board books, narrative poetry, seasonal stories
or books designed to be a series. Nor are we interested in manuscripts written
to convey a lesson or a moral.
It is
recommended that prospective authors visit a library or bookstore to familiarize
themselves with the kinds of books we publish.

Submissions should be legibly typed. We do not accept fax or e-mail
submissions.

Please
submit no more than one manuscript at a time.

All
submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter.

Query
letters, cover letters and the first page of the manuscript should include
the author’s name, address and phone number.

Please
do not submit the original copy of your manuscript. We cannot be
responsible for the loss of unsolicited works.

We will
do our best to return manuscripts, but we cannot guarantee this unless we
also receive a S.A.S.E. with sufficient Canadian postage (stamps only; no
cheques or money orders, please). We cannot return manuscripts C.O.D.

Please
do not submit art with your story.

Please
do not bind your work-- a paper clip or elastic band will do.

We do
not accept manuscripts that have been mailed out to other publishing houses
simultaneously (multiple submissions).
Due to the
volume of submissions, please allow 4-6 months for a response. Please be
patient.
Art Guidelines
We accept
samples along with an illustrator bio and a website address, if available.

CDs are
acceptable but not preferred.

Please do
not email or fax samples.

Please do
not send conventional cartoon and animation styles, mass market romance, horror
or science fiction styles.

Please do
not send original art, hand-bound books or other bulky submissions or anything
that needs to be returned.
