The Warblers of Eastern North America provides a current view of the natural history of one of the most colorful and popular birds native to eastern Canada and the United States. The focus is on the species-level description of all members of this family that range east of the Mississippi River, covering their ranges, typical plumage, habitats, ecology, and best spots to be found. Each typical breeding habitat, and winter habitat in their wintering grounds, is described. A range map showing spring migration patterns and chronology, and a sonogram, are provided for each species. General introductory information is provided for warbler taxonomy, species numbers, plumage coloration, and ranges throughout the Western Hemisphere; the purpose of, variation in, and expression of songs; general habitat requirements and uses; the process and general patterns of migration; food and foraging strategies and patterns; subspecies and complex morphological relationships; warbler habitat in the winter ranges; an overview of the ecological role of warblers; and threats to warblers in the natural and man-made environment. One section is devoted to the best sites in North America at which to find and watch warblers and the equipment with which to attract, see, and record them. Particularly important are the facts that this book goes far beyond the field-guide norm to provide a classical natural history of this group of such very appealing birds, and it provides current information on the increasing challenges being faced by these important elements of American biodiversity.
