Vanessa Shields turns the themes of femininity and motherhood upside down in this, her first book of poetry. She holds nothing back in telling the raw truth of being a woman in the 21st century. But amid the biting wit and brutal honesty, there is also that sweet reflection of the poet who breathes life into words that tell the story of someone brave enough to be that woman. Shields in I Am That Woman dares to challenge the modern story of a wife, a mother, a lover and a friend.
Vanessa Shields has been writing poetry her whole life. Her poetry, short stories and photography have been published in literary magazines, collections and anthologies. Her articles have been published in Write! Magazine, The Windsor Star and Liberating Working Women. She was the recipient of the "Emerging Artist — Literary Award" from the Windsor Endowment for the Arts. She has a diploma for "Writing for Children and Teens" from the Institute for Children's Literature. When she's not writing poetry or working on her novels, Shields teaches creative writing classes and workshops. Shields does Poetry On Demand at festivals and readings. She lives in Windsor, ON with her husband Nick and their children Jett and Miller.
