Confucius (551 BCE - 479 BCE), revered ancient Chinese teacher, politician, and philosopher, is known the world over. He grew up during a time of great suffering and warfare in China, and as a young boy, he loved books and learning. As a young man, he was troubled by the chaotic state of society. Confucius believed the whole structure of society must change, and that government reform was needed. He devoted his life to these causes. He taught the value of compassion and tradition. He taught morals, how to behave properly, the right and wrong way of being. He believed leaders needed to exercise self—discipline. They should be respectful, tolerant, trustworthy, and generous. In doing so, they would lead by positive example.
Confucius is one of the most influential thinkers in history, and his teachings, collectively known as Confucianism, have transcended the ages. His ideas continue to influence democratic ideals and serve as a guide to a moral and responsible life.
