Steve Whysall has led a long career as a reporter and editor. From 1968 to 1975, he worked at several newspapers in England including the London Evening News, Bristol Evening Post, Leicester Mercury, and the Nottingham Evening Post. In 1975, Steve came to Canada with his wife and worked for the Winnipeg Free Press until 1979, when he moved to Vancouver to work for the Vancouver Sun. He has been there ever since.
In 1990, Steve began writing gardening stories for the Sun, eventually producing a popular series of weekly articles called “Down the Garden Path,” where he profiled the best gardeners in BC. This series led to a full gardening page, which ran, for many years, in the Sun’s "New Homes" section.
Since then, Steve has achieved great successes as a garden writer. In 1999, he was named the first recipient of the Communicator of the Year Award given by the BC Landscape and Nursery Association and has been the head judge for the association’s annual awards. Steve has also written three books: The Blooming Gardening Book, 100 Best Plants for Ontario Gardens, and 100 Best Plants for the Coastal Garden has sold over 25,000 copies. It was completely revised and updated in 2005. Now Steve brings us his fourth book: The Vancouver Sun's Best Plant Picks.
For the past six years, Steve has moderated The Vancouver Sun Gardener’s School at the BC Home & Garden Show, where his lectures always draw a full house. He has also been the judge of display gardens at the shows.
Today, Steve writes a full-colour garden page called In The Garden, which appears every Friday in the Vancouver Sun. In addition to his regular columns, he is also a regular speaker at garden clubs, has written for various magazines and has made numerous television appearances.
Steve and his wife, Loraine, have been married for 32 years and have three children.
